The Dewa Sanzan Pilgrimage in Yamagata, Tohoku, offers an easily accessible yet profoundly spiritual hiking experience. This 10km trail, encompassing a 600m elevation gain, guides pilgrims through a landscape steeped in ancient traditions and breathtaking natural beauty. Beginning at Zuishinmon Gate, the path immediately immerses hikers in an ethereal world of towering, centuries-old cedar trees, many designated as natural monuments. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and verdant foliage, creating a serene, almost mystical atmosphere perfect for reflection. While classified as an easy hike, the journey presents a moderate physical challenge, particularly the ascent of 2446 stone steps leading towards the summit of Hagurosan. Further along, hikers encounter the Jijisugi, an immense sacred cedar tree estimated to be over a thousand years old, before reaching the Dewa Sanzan Shrine at the peak. Hikers should wear sturdy, comfortable footwear suitable for uneven stone steps and varying terrain. Layers of clothing are advisable due to potential weather changes, especially at higher elevations. Bringing water is essential.
