About Hike in Japan

Our Mission

We help outdoor enthusiasts discover Japan's incredible hiking trails — from ancient pilgrimage routes to challenging mountain peaks.

What We Do

We curate and map hiking trails across Japan. Each trail includes detailed information about difficulty, duration, best seasons, and practical tips for hikers.

Coverage

Our database covers hiking trails across all 47 prefectures of Japan, including famous routes like Kumano Kodo and Japan Alps.

How It Works

Every trail in our database has been researched for accuracy, with information sourced from national park authorities, mountain hut associations, local hiking clubs, and verified trip reports. Each listing includes difficulty ratings, distance, elevation gain, estimated duration, trailhead access details, and seasonal considerations. We note when trails require special permits, have limited water sources, or pass through areas with bear activity. Our difficulty ratings follow a standardized scale from easy walks to expert-level alpine routes, helping you choose trails that match your experience and fitness level.

Why We Built This

Japan's mountains are spectacular but can be challenging to navigate as an international hiker. Trail information is often available only in Japanese, trailhead access from major cities is complex, and conditions change dramatically with the seasons. We created Hike in Japan to provide reliable, English-language trail information that helps you explore Japan's mountains safely and confidently — whether you're planning a gentle nature walk near Kyoto or a multi-day traverse of the Northern Alps.

Community

Trail conditions change constantly — landslides, bridge washouts, and seasonal closures can affect any route. If you've recently hiked a trail and noticed changed conditions, closures, or inaccuracies in our listings, please report them. Your updates help keep fellow hikers safe and informed.
