Terms of Service

Last updated: April 2026

1. Introduction and Acceptance

Welcome to Hike in Japan (hikeinjapan.jp), an online platform that helps visitors and residents discover hiking trails, mountain routes, pilgrimages, and outdoor walking paths throughout Japan. By accessing or using our website, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy. Please read these terms carefully, particularly the sections on assumption of risk and safety disclaimers, as hiking and outdoor activities carry inherent risks including serious injury or death. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the website.

These terms constitute a binding legal agreement between you and the operators of Hike in Japan. If you are accessing the website on behalf of a hiking group, tour operator, or other organization, you confirm that you have the authority to bind that entity to these terms.

2. Description of Service

Hike in Japan is a trail discovery and hiking information platform. We provide curated listings, route descriptions, and editorial content about outdoor activities in Japan, including:

  • Day hikes and nature walks across all 47 prefectures
  • Multi-day treks and mountain hut-to-hut routes
  • Alpine routes in the Japanese Alps (Northern, Central, and Southern)
  • Historic pilgrimages such as the Kumano Kodo and Shikoku 88 Temple Circuit
  • Volcano hikes and geologically significant trails
  • Coastal walks and island trails

Hike in Japan is an informational resource only. We do not provide guide services, organize group hikes, manage mountain huts, or coordinate any outdoor activities. All hiking and outdoor decisions are made solely by you at your own risk.

3. Assumption of Risk and Safety Disclaimer

Hiking, trekking, mountaineering, and other outdoor activities described on Hike in Japan are inherently dangerous and can result in serious injury, permanent disability, or death.

By using information from Hike in Japan to plan or undertake any outdoor activity, you acknowledge and voluntarily accept the following risks and responsibilities:

  • Trail conditions change constantly: Trails described on our platform may be affected by landslides, fallen trees, erosion, bridge collapses, volcanic activity, or other hazards at any time. Routes that were passable when we published information about them may become impassable or dangerous without warning.
  • Weather risks: Mountain weather in Japan can change rapidly and without warning. Conditions including sudden storms, heavy rain, snow, ice, fog, extreme heat, and lightning pose serious safety risks. Hypothermia and heat stroke are real dangers on Japanese trails depending on the season.
  • Difficulty ratings are estimates: Trail difficulty ratings, elevation profiles, time estimates, and physical fitness requirements published on our platform are approximate guidelines based on typical conditions. Your personal experience may differ significantly due to weather, trail condition changes, your fitness level, equipment, and other variables.
  • Wildlife hazards: Japanese mountains and forests are home to bears (both Asian black bears and brown bears in Hokkaido), wild boar, venomous snakes (mamushi, habu), hornets, and other wildlife that may pose safety risks.
  • Volcanic activity: Several popular hiking destinations in Japan are active volcanoes. Volcanic eruptions, toxic gas emissions, and sudden changes in volcanic alert levels can occur without significant advance warning.
  • Limited rescue access: Many trails in Japan pass through remote areas with no cell phone coverage, no nearby medical facilities, and limited or slow rescue access. Helicopter rescue in mountainous terrain is not always possible due to weather conditions.

You are solely responsible for assessing your own physical fitness, experience level, equipment, and preparedness before undertaking any hike or outdoor activity. Hike in Japan strongly recommends:

  • Checking current trail conditions with local mountain huts, visitor centers, or municipal offices
  • Monitoring weather forecasts from the Japan Meteorological Agency before and during your hike
  • Filing a hiking plan (tozan todoke) with local authorities or police when required or recommended
  • Carrying appropriate equipment including rain gear, warm layers, first-aid supplies, and sufficient water
  • Bringing a physical map and compass — do not rely solely on smartphone GPS in mountain areas
  • Purchasing mountain rescue insurance (yama no hoken) before alpine hikes
  • Turning back if conditions deteriorate or if a route exceeds your ability

4. Content Accuracy and Trail Information

Hike in Japan strives to present reliable trail information, but the outdoor environment is constantly evolving. You acknowledge the following:

  • Trail access and closures: Trails may be officially closed during certain seasons, after natural disasters, or during periods of elevated volcanic alert. Seasonal closures for alpine routes (typically November through June) are common. Access roads and trailhead parking may also be affected.
  • Mountain hut information: Operating seasons, reservation requirements, meal availability, capacity, and fees for mountain huts may differ from what is published on our platform. Many huts require advance reservations, especially during peak seasons.
  • Transportation to trailheads: Bus schedules, road conditions, and access routes to trailheads may change seasonally or due to weather events. Some trailheads are only accessible during specific months.
  • Route descriptions: GPS coordinates, waypoints, and route descriptions are provided as general guidance. They should not be your sole means of navigation. Trail markings on the ground may be faded, missing, or obscured by snow or vegetation.
