Iconic Gunma peak known for dramatic ridgelines and challenging weather.
Mt. Tanigawa (1,977m) on the border of Gunma and Niigata Prefectures is one of Japan's most dramatic alpine peaks, known for its sheer rock faces and unpredictable weather. Despite its moderate height, it has claimed more lives than any other mountain in Japan due to its extreme weather conditions, earning it the nickname "Mountain of Death." The Tenjindaira ropeway provides access to a relatively safe trail along the ridge to the twin summits.
