Mt. Ontake (3,067m) is a massive volcanic stratovolcano straddling Nagano and Gifu Prefectures, and one of the most sacred peaks in Japanese mountain worship. The mountain was the site of a tragic eruption in 2014, and memorials along the trail serve as solemn reminders. Multiple crater lakes dot the broad summit plateau, and the extensive trail network passes through forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic terrain.
