Mt. Ishizuchi (1,982m) is the highest peak in western Japan and one of the seven holy mountains of Shugendo mountain asceticism. Located in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, the trail features dramatic iron chain climbing sections bolted into sheer rock faces, a legacy of centuries of pilgrimage. The summit ridge offers breathtaking views across the Shikoku mountain range and to the Seto Inland Sea.

Take JR to Iyo-Saijo Station, then a bus to the Ishizuchi Ropeway base (about 55 minutes). The ropeway ascends to Joju, from where the hike begins. By car, use the Matsuyama Expressway to Iyo-Saijo IC.
The chain climbing sections are optional but the bypass trail is still steep. Chains are extremely dangerous when wet—avoid in rain. The summit (Tengu-dake) involves exposed knife-edge ridge—not for those with vertigo. Winter requires crampons and ice axes. Mountain can be closed during severe weather.
