Mt. Aso Nakadake is the active volcanic crater at the heart of the Aso caldera in Kumamoto Prefecture, one of the largest calderas in the world. The hike across the stark, otherworldly volcanic landscape leads to the rim of the steaming crater with its vivid turquoise lake. The surrounding Kusasenri grasslands and panoramic views of the vast caldera create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Japan.
