Mt. Aso Nakadake is the active volcanic crater at the heart of the Aso caldera in Kumamoto Prefecture, one of the largest calderas in the world. The hike across the stark, otherworldly volcanic landscape leads to the rim of the steaming crater with its vivid turquoise lake. The surrounding Kusasenri grasslands and panoramic views of the vast caldera create a landscape unlike anywhere else in Japan.

Access
Take the JR Hohi Line to Aso Station (about 70 minutes from Kumamoto), then a bus to the Aso Volcano Museum area (about 35 minutes). The ropeway or shuttle takes you closer to the crater. By car, use the Aso Panorama Road.
Warnings & Safety
Access to the crater rim is frequently restricted due to volcanic activity—check the alert level before visiting. Toxic volcanic gases (SO2) can be dangerous; visitors with respiratory conditions should avoid the crater area. Shelters are provided in case of eruption. Weather can change rapidly.
