剱岳は標高2,999mで、日本の一般登山道で最も危険とされる山の一つであり、日本で最後に登頂された山の一つです。一般的な別山尾根ルートには、カニのヨコバイやカニのタテバイと呼ばれる鎖とハシゴの掛かった断崖区間があります。深い畏敬を集める山であり、経験豊富な登山者に比類ない達成感をもたらします。
