谷川岳は群馬県と新潟県の県境にある標高1,977mの山で、切り立った岩壁と予測不能な天候で知られる日本有数の高山です。標高は中程度ながら、極端な気象条件により日本で最も多くの遭難者を出した山で「魔の山」の異名を持ちます。天神平ロープウェイから稜線を歩く比較的安全なルートで双耳峰の山頂に立てます。
